50 Feet From the Cutting Edge in the Northeast Kansas Library System

NEKLS Tech Blog in Computers in Libraries

Posted on September 28th, 2009 by smoreland

Patti Butcher at the State Library was kind enough to let us know that this humble blog was mentioned in the October 2009 issue of Computes in Libraries (p. 40, ‘online treasures’ by Janet L. Balas).  According to Janet, our site was mentioned because it contained “current projects in libraries that are on the cutting edge of technology–projects that inspire librarians because they emphasize what the library can do now to provide improved service that couldn’t be done without recent advancements in technology.”

Heather Braum, Liz Rea, Thatcher Rea and I all contribute to the blog from time to time – letting our member libraries know about cool new gadgets/software/trends that we come across and want to share.

Thank you to CIL for this recognition!

2009 Teen Titles (totally non-techy)

Posted on September 24th, 2009 by smoreland

We all went to NEST last week and I attended Erin Downey’s book talk on 2009 Teen Titles (and took notes for Rita)…well I blogged about the titles and am happy to report that only 2 of the titles Erin mentioned are NOT in the NExpress Shared Catalog.  I especially want to read Thirteenth Child, A Curse Dark as Gold and the Kristin Cashore books Graceling and Fire.

What do you want to share from NEST??

The Top Ten Things Library Administrators Should Know About Technology

Posted on September 14th, 2009 by Heather Braum

Roy Tennant has put together a great list of the top ten things library administrators should know about technology. He also put the call out on Twitter for responses, and created a second post dedicated to those answers. I highly recommend you check both out.

My personal favorites?

  1. Technology isn’t as hard as you think it is.
  2. Technology gets easier all the time.

And from the Twitterati list:

  • Allow your staff time and resources to experiment – even if nothing comes of it. Innovation comes with risks.
  • It’s OK to fail.
  • No platform is forever. Ask not only how you’ll move onto it, but how you’ll move off of it.

Check out both lists when you have a chance!
