Ooh! Now this is interesting. A web browser based method of connecting to IM services such as MSN, Yahoo!, or AOL IM.

Now there is no excuse to not allow patrons access to IM in the library, as we don’t even have to install the software!

MIT Technology Review – The Infinite Library

Posted on April 27th, 2005 by Liz

Those of you in larger, more research oriented libraries may be interested in this article from the MIT Technology Review re: the digitization of Libraries, and Google Print.

From the Article:
“Thanks to the Ethernet ports and the university’s effort to digitize irreplaceable books like the catalogues—which often contain the only clue to locating an obscure book or manuscript elsewhere in the vast library—users of the Bodleian don’t even need to take the books off the shelves. They can simply plug in their laptops, connect to the Internet, and view the pertinent pages online. In fact, anyone with a Web browser can read the catalogues, a privilege once restricted to those fortunate enough to be teaching or studying at Oxford.”

From the article: “The article is about some university libraries who are creating spaces known as “Information Commons.” These spaces are noted for their long hours, the availablity of computers for patrons, access to reference materials and access to professional assistance in the areas of both technology and reference.”

Sounds like a good idea, would we be able to implement this in our libraries?

LawLibTech.com – Be Aware of Spyware

Posted on April 26th, 2005 by Liz

From the article: “Is it paranoia if everyone is truly is out to get you? Because it’s safe to say our PCs really are constantly under attack. There are phishing schemes, viruses, keylogging programs, identity theft and computer hijacking to worry about. And then there’s spyware. If you spend any time at all on the web, you will likely have at least some spyware on your computer. When EarthLink and Webroot Software surveyed 1 million computers last year, they found an average of almost 28 spyware programs running on each one. A study by AOL reported spyware on 80% of the computers surveyed. So the odds are against us.”
